Shane Johnston

Shane has been playing competitive volleyball for over 20 years. He entered his first contest at age 12, making it to the playoffs of an
A-level beach doubles tournament with his brother in Cocoa Beach, FL. Continuing to play sand and grass volleyball through junior high
school helped prepare him for a starting position as an outside hitter at Boulder Volleyball Club (BVC) where he helped win Regional and
Colorado State Championships his Junior and Senior years. Those same years, Shane competed nationally in several tournaments, winning the Lone Star Classic in Austin, TX as a junior, and finishing in the Gold Division at the Junior Nationals his third time there as a senior. That same year he seized an opportunity to travel internationally, having been invited to compete in Australia against their junior national team in Brisbane.

His love for the sport took him to volleyball mecca, Santa Barbara, CA where he would walk-on to the UCSB men’s team, earning the
team’s first ever starting Libero position. As a senior at UCSB, Shane was awarded Most Consistent Player for his steady passing and
reliable defense in the back row that helped secure the Gauchos as one of the top-ranked Division I teams in the country. After finishing his NCAA career in 2001, Shane spent his final year of competitive indoor volleyball training with a professional team in Madrid, Spain.

As a coach, Shane has trained both boys and girls ranging from 12-16 years old, since 2000. He has assisted and led dozens of individual camps both on the beach and indoors, focusing primarily as the head coach for local girls’ teams at Beach & Bay Volleyball Club since 2006. Players can expect to work hard and to be inspired by Shane’slove of the sport and passion for teaching others how to take their game to the next level.
