Shane Johnston
Shane played his first beach volleyball tournament with his older brother at Cocoa Beach, FL when he was 12 years old. After making it into the playoffs, he was hooked. Since then, Shane went on to play for Boulder Volleyball Club as an outside hitter, winning Regional and Colorado State Championships his Junior and Senior years, and placing in the Gold Division at the Junior Nationals. In 2000, Shane walked-on and earned the starting Libero job for UC Santa Barbara’s men's volleyball team. As a senior at UCSB, Shane was awarded Most Consistent Player for his steady passing and reliable defense in the back row. After finishing his NCAA career in 2001, Shane spent his final year of indoor volleyball training with a professional team in Madrid, Spain. These days, you'll find Shane on the courts at South Mission Beach, training to maintain his authority over Danny Hughes' doubles game.
When Shane is not training your daughters in the gym, he is working as a financial planner for Blue Summit Financial Group, specializing in Socially Responsible Investments.
Shane coached a 16s boys team in Santa Barbara during his time at UCSB and has since coached 2 seasons of girls’ 14s locals at San Diego Volleyball Club and one season of 12s locals at Beach & Bay Volleyball Club.
Shane loves coaching volleyball because it offers a way for him to pass on his knowledge and love for the sport. Not to mention, kids at this age are a lot of fun and their energy is contagious.
