Jon Murphy

jon murphyJon is a devoted volleyball coach and enjoys teaching the fundamentals of the sport and fostering a fun environment in which to play.

Jons volleyball career began in Laguna Beach High School and continued at Arizona State University.  While in Tempe, he competed in ASUs intramural program and both directed and played for the intercollegiate Club program for two years.  Jon was integral in expanding the Club program from the original two teams to five.  During his time at ASU, Jon had the opportunity to take part in the Junior Olympics in Texas and traveled to Russia in 1987 to participate in a Volleyball for Peace tour.  Jon graduated with a degree in Sociology.

Upon returning to California, Jon decided that San Diego was to be his next stop, and has lived here ever since.  Jon began coaching at Sunwest VC, later renamed Epic Volleyball Club.  While at Sunwest for 5 years, he coached every age group between 14s and 18s.  Jon also trained numerous collegiate players returning to San Diego in their off-season conditioning and skill development programs.  Jon was also the Assistant Varsity Coach for OLP while helping run the Freshman and JV teams.

For the several years Jon worked with Coast Volleyball Club at the local 14s level.  Many of the players from these teams have moved on to compete in High School, JV, and Freshman teams.  Jon was instrumental in helping many of his players make the transition from participating in the local volleyball programs to competing on the National and Regional teams.

Jon is driven to coach by being able to turn on the light for athletes.  Coaching the correct fundamentals is not just about volleyball, but about the building blocks for life.  Beach and Bay is excited that Jon is returning for his 4th season this year, as he brings a wealth of volleyball experience and energy to his teams.
